About Me

Text Box: After earning an engineering degree, I fulfilled a dream and joined the United States Peace Corps. I spent two and a half years teaching science in Malaysia as well as travelling across SE Asia and parts of the Middle East. This was a life changing experience as I learned about many other cultures, that there are good people across the globe, and that one can connect on a person to person basis with others from many different cultures, religions, and backgrounds.
After returning to the United States, I worked as a solar engineer and went back to school to earn a masters and a doctorate degree in communication. I continued with my service activities when I came to CMU. Some of these include
First Recycler of the Year in Isabella County
Participant in the Isabella County Master Composter Program
Sabbatical Year with the Child and Family Enrichment Council
Caberfae Peaks and Crystal Mountain Volunteer Ski Patrols
I have had a number of leadership positions. I managed a warehouse, light manufacturing, and installation while in the solar industry in Denver, Colorado. In my 20 years at CMU, I have been Chair of my Department and the Academic Senate as well as President of the Faculty Association (the faculty labor union). I have chaired many different university committees.
I like to think of myself as both a listener and a problem solver. I have a natural curiosity about most things, so listening to other people is engaging for me. For a couple of years, I had a radio show on CMU’s public radio, called “Inside Central,” where I interviewed faculty about their research interests. As far as a problem solver, I am confident that most people who know me would say I am open to investigating and then working on complicated problems, trying to find an outcome that both works for and serves the needs of as many people as possible.
I believe my history and experiences mixed with both my natural abilities and what I have learned along the way make me a prime candidate for the job of Isabella County Commissioner. I hold myself to a high standard of integrity and believe that people everywhere know what they want and deserve a government representative that will help them address those needs. I am a service leader, a reasonable and prudent decision maker, and someone more interested in working with, as opposed to working against, others

I come originally from South Dakota, from the Black Hills.  My great grandparents came to South Dakota as homesteaders and farmers. I grew up in a small town, called Rapid City.  My father was a building contractor and then an insurance salesman, and my mother was a small college registrar.  My father also continued to farm on a part-time basis, so I spent a lot of time either accompanying him to the job site or the farm.  I  think it is fair to say that I have a very traditional, middle class background.
